We all need hope. No matter how bad the situation is, if a person has hope, a person has life, a person has meaning, and a person has the spirit of joy.
Yet, misdirected hope is the cause of all fear. We put our hope in the fallible soldiers of this world: our own abilities and abilities of others. But can anything or anyone in this world save us from death? On the other hand, because everything and everyone that we place our hopes in, is subject to the destructive effect of time, they themselves become the cause of all fear. Therefore, somehow or other if we get the association of godly men, and in their association gain hope in the right thing, in God, then that is our greatest fortune.
In good association we have to just understand with good intelligence where our hope really is, and act accordingly. However, for most of us, until we are quite materially hopeless, we do not really take God seriously. Fortunately, the nature of the world is, eventually everyone without exception is brought to a point in life where everything material becomes hopeless, whether we are rich or poor, man or woman, Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Jain, Parsi, atheist, PhD or illiterate.
Once a person came to his mentor and said, "I am feeling hopeless." The mentor replied, "Very good." The mentor then gave an example. "There was a music teacher and he would charge certain fee for people who did not know anything about music and for people who did, he would charge double. The extra charge was for unlearning them of the wrong things before he could teach them the right things." So, before we could really learn how to find hope in God, we have to realize how everything else is hopeless. That is not a negative attitude. That is the most positive attitude.
