Gas prices are rising. Food prices are rising. The value of our currency is plummeting. Is there an end in sight? If so, how bad will it get before it's over and, most important, what can you do to benefit from this time of economic uncertainty? I don't claim to have all the answers, but I have built three successful businesses in spite of the economic downturn, and here's what I believe we all need to restore hope in this time of uncertainty...
Hope Begins With Wisdom of What Really Works
The first thing we need it to identify who the true experts are and listen to what they have to say. The unfortunate thing about the age of information is that everyone now has a place to toot their horn about what they believe that they know about creating financial independence. Some of these people are very passionate and mean well, but passion and good intentions aren't enough when the whole economy is collapsing around us.
It's a dangerous thing when someone has passion for a subject, but no expert knowledge...such a person is dangerous because their passion makes them so believable. What they think they know about the subject they're advising you on is MUCH more dangerous than what YOU don't know about it.
So who are the experts?
Three Ways to Identify an Expert
Experts are easy to spot when you know exactly what to look for. First, look for the people who have been writing about the topic of financial independence, leadership and wealth building since before this crisis started, and who have made predictions which have now proven to be true. This is pretty easy to do, just check out a few authors like: Steven Covey, Clay Shirky, Michael Maloney, Seth Godin, Robert Kiyosaki and Dave Ramsey.
If you read the books which these author wrote just a few years before this economic mess broke out, you'll find that they made several predictions about the economy which have since then proven to be true. All of these authors have one thing in common, and it's the second thing which will help you spot a true leader and expert...it's the knowledge of how human behavior brings about changes in the economy.
Number crunchers who sit hunched over computers searching for the "secret formula to wealth building" are theorists at best, and have a poor track record for predicting change. Money moves according to human behaviors, and the better you understand human behavior, the more accurately you'll be able to predict the flow of wealth from one place to another.
Finally, experts usually aren't the most like[able people in the world. This is because they're more concerned with delivering accurate knowledge than they are with having people like them. Meanwhile, it's in our nature to take advice from people who we like, which is one of the most common reasons people aren't thriving in their financial life or in their relationships.
Everyone is in the advice giving business, even if they don't get paid to do it. Unfortunately not everyone belongs in the advice giving business, and this is why you have to be prudent about who you listen to. If you find someone who has made proven predictions about the future and who understands human nature and if you stop listening to people just because you like them, you'll have an unfair advantage over the majority of the population.
